Senior Data Engineer
About us
The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko is an independent Crown entity that regulates the electricity market. We are a kaitiaki of electricity, and our purpose is to enhance New Zealanders’ lives, prosperity, and environment through electricity. We are focused on achieving an electricity system that is secure, resilient, and affordable, and provides more choices for consumers. Competition is critical to making this happen.
The electricity industry is at a pivotal moment, with the journey towards renewable energy sources and innovation reshaping how we operate. To meet these challenges and opportunities, we’re evolving as an organisation – growing our capabilities, expanding our reach, and building a team ready to create a brighter, more sustainable future for Aotearoa. Our focus is on making a difference through bold thinking, collaboration, and delivering value for the communities we serve.
About the role
At the Electricity Authority, we offer a collaborative environment where you'll work across the full data engineering lifecycle, using modern tools and practices to solve complex, meaningful problems.
We’re seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Products team in a fixed term position until 30 June 2026. You’ll help shape and maintain our highly secure and modern data platform, built around Databricks and the Delta Lakehouse architecture.
This is a hands-on technical role where you’ll:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines
- Support analysts, data scientists, and BI specialists with trusted, timely data
- Collaborate across the Authority to enhance our analytics capability
- Champion best practice data governance and data engineering
- Contribute to the stewardship of commercially sensitive and PII data
You’ll be part of a small, agile team where everyone contributes across the tech stack — from architecture to deployment. We value initiative, curiosity, and the ability to ‘figure it out’ in a complex, data-rich sector.
Why work with us?
Electricity plays a critical role in the quality of our lives and businesses. As an electricity kaitiaki our work is diverse, intellectually challenging and contributes directly to our communities, economy, environment, and the nation as a whole. We are a small but high-impact organisation where talented individuals can make a real difference. We foster an open, collaborative environment that encourages quality, innovation, ongoing learning, and knowledge sharing.
We support a healthy work-life balance and offer a range of benefits to support our teams:
- Competitive remuneration range, starting from $132,000-$165,000 (plus 3% net KiwiSaver contribution)
- Flexible working options
- Individual and organisational support for training and development
Are you someone with the following?
- 5+ years’ experience in cloud-based data engineering (Azure Databricks preferred)
- Strong skills in SQL and Python
- Familiarity with CI/CD, Azure DevOps, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
- Experience with Databricks and Delta Lakehouse (or ability to quickly adapt)
- Comfort working in a lean team with broad responsibilities
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and solve problems independently
- Strong communication and documentation skills
